A new algae biofuels research and development center opened in Fort Myers, Florida, on Tuesday.
Algenol Biofuels, Inc., has established a 40,000 square foot facility as part of its larger Lee Integrated Biorefinery, housing advanced algae systems and a green chemistry laboratory.
The project has been supported with a $10 million grant from the Lee County Board of Commissioners.
Algenol Founder and Chief Executive Officer Paul Woods said the opening of the facility was a “remarkable milestone” in his company’s commercialization of its algae-based biofuels.
He said: “With the opening of our new biofuels and green chemistry facility, we aim to make Florida a hub for green, clean technology innovation that will create jobs, lessen our dependence on foreign oil and reduce carbon pollution.”
