Governo adia plano na área de biodiesel pela escassez de óleo de palma

Government plans to replace B3 biodiesel with B5 early next year may be delayed, as the local palm oil supply is insufficient, says the Energy Ministry.

Minister Wannarat Channukul said tight palm oil supply may prompt the scheduled January start to be postponed until later in the first quarter

An Agriculture Ministry report said that as of early last month, there were only 70,000 tonnes of palm oil in stock, a significant drop from the normal level of 120,000 to 130,000 tonnes.

The shortage arose due to several factors, including the recent floods and earlier drought.

The Agriculture Ministry previously forecast production of 1.7 million tonnes of crude palm oil this year, of which 1 million tonnes are used in the food industry, 600,000 tonnes for biodiesel and the rest for export.

Before the flooding, it forecast next year's production at 1.85 million tonnes.

The Energy Ministry forecasts the energy sector will consume up to 900,000 tonnes of crude palm oil next year if the mandatory replacement of B3, containing 3% biofuel, with B5 or 5% biofuel does take effect early next year.
