The late patriarch of billionaire Smorgon family, Victor Smorgon, long had a famous saying: "My business is a 10-year overnight success."
Now his 40-year-old grandson Peter Edwards is taking the same patient approach to the development of the group's fledgling biodiesel business.
His Victor Smorgon Group (VSG) owns and operates a 100 million litre biodiesel plant at Laverton North outside Melbourne.
It sells biodiesel to groups such as Caltex and Liberty as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to diesel and is about to embark on a multi-million-dollar expansion of its operations.
"It is not a large part of the group but from the family point of view, we believe that fuel prices are going to go up again, and if we are able to stick it out and really develop the biodiesel industry in Australia, it will be a very viable and profitable business," Edwards tells The Australian.
