Imperium Renewables, a biodiesel refining company, has been selected by the US Department of Energy (DoE) to develop biofuels for military and civilian aviation use.

The partnership, which is being led by LanzaTech, has received $4 million (€3 million) from the DoE to develop the renewable fuel alongside companies such as Boeing and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

‘This grant will help Imperium provide sustainable, economically viable drop-in biofuels that will allow commercial airlines and the Department of Defense to become less reliant on foreign oil,’ says Imperium CEO John Plaza.

The announcement comes following President Obama’s decision to invest in sustainable and domestically developed drop-in aviation and marine biofuels.
