Centre for Process Innovation helps make whisky fuel

A SCOTTISH whisky distillery is about to become the first in the world to turn its waste into advanced biofuel - here on Teesside.

Tullibardine, an independent malt whisky producer, is using Centre for Process Innovation’s world-class biotech facilities at Wilton.

The fuel could be used to power petrol and diesel engines.

It’s believed the technology could help contribute towards the Scottish Government’s 2020 carbon emissions target.

Three litres of the fuel have so far been produced during “proof-of-concept” research, conducted at Edinburgh Napier.

CPI will now scale up the process to 10,000 litres.

Chris Dowle, director of sustainable processing at CPI, said: “This is a leading-edge technology in its field, in the application of whisky distilleries.
