Philippines push to run 30% of public transit on biofuels by 2030

The Energy Department plans to require 30 percent of all public utility vehicles to run on alternative fuels by 2030 to promote energy security and cleaner fuels.

“In order to attain such goal, we will be relentless in promoting the use of clean and alternative fuels,” Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla said.

Petilla said the government aimed to achieve the goal by raising the biofuel blend by up to 20 percent by 2030, increasing the number of compressed natural gas and auto-LPG vehicles plying the country’s major routes and massively deploying electric automotives starting off with electric tricycles with assistance from the Asian Development Bank.

The department has allowed state-owned PNOC Exploration Corp. to put up modular CNG stations to increase the number of CNG buses.
