Argentina launches WTO challenge to EU biodiesel rules

Argentina has launched a challenge at the World Trade Organization against European Union rules for importing and marketing biodiesel.

The complaint applies to EU measures - used by Spain, Belgium, France, Italy and Poland. The EU has 60 days to address Argentina's complaint, by explaining or changing its rules.

According to the European Union the limits to Argentina’s biodiesel sales are part of a mechanism to reduce greenhouse gases.

But in an official statement, Argentina’s Foreign Ministry in Buenos Aires blasted the move by the EU arguing it “violates” WTO’s standards and agreements and “hinders constructive dialogue” among regions.

For lawmakers aligned with the Kirchner government what Europe is trying to do is to close its markets. Argentina believes most Latin American countries’ determination to protect their industries and domestic markets.
