Iowa company's biodiesel fuels generators for Super Bowl, activities

An Iowa-based company is going to help keep the lights on at the Super Bowl.

Renewable Energy Group said Wednesday that it would provide up to 15,000 gallons of biodiesel — blends that range from 5 to 20 percent — to power generators at the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and the events that lead up to it.

Jack Groh, the National Football League’s environmental program director, said the biodiesel-fueled generators are part of a “double redundant system at the stadium” developed to prevent another power failure. Last year, a blackout plunged the Super Bowl into darkness and halted play for a half-hour.
